Nigel Clarke

Volunteer, Trustee, Treasurer, Events Volunteer

Hi, my name is Nigel and I have lived in the village since the year 2000. Wanting to make new friends locally, I joined the committee shortly after arriving and have held the post of Treasurer since 2008. In recent years I have also helped Albert Britcliffe to run the Film Club - new members always welcome!

Before I came to the village I worked all over the UK in plant biochemistry research before retraining as a teacher in 1995. I moved to Lancashire to marry Sue and then taught at CRGS for over 20 years, retiring in 2024. In my spare time I still play football (walking now), attend concerts (rock and folk) and enjoy travel in the UK and abroad. MBCC has made me feel part of the community and I really hope that other people new to the area will follow in my footsteps and help the centre to continue to be the hub of the village.

Seamus Heffernan

Hi, My name is Seamus

I have been a Committee Member since 2004, and Chair and Trustee since 2019.

I am a retired sound engineer/teacher

I help in technical matters & promote folk music concerts under the company name Shamrock Promotions, using the Centre as a venue. I also plan and help deliver live events as fund-raisers for the Centre.

I enjoy tennis both as a player and a spectator

I believe in the importance of putting systems in place that renew year on year: “There’s always going to be day to day tasks for our volunteers to complete, but long term solutions are critical in effective management”

John Evans

Hello. I'm John and I’ve lived in Mellor Brook & Balderstone since 1985.

I am originally from Cardiff and moved to Lancashire in 1976. I am a school governor, a PCC member and chair of Samlesbury Area Civic Society. I enjoy cooking, listening to music, the theatre & family activities.

I worked for 36 years in the motor trade and have run my own businesses since 2004.

I really enjoy volunteering because we, as a family, get so much from our local community. It's nice to be able to give something back and hopefully “make a difference”. I find volunteering rewarding and motivating.

I joined the Centre committee in 2014  and have been reasonably successful in securing much needed funding. I also run the 100 Club and help out at as many “do’s” as I can. I love being part of the MBCC family.

 

Julie Caton

Hi everyone, I'm Julie and I've lived in the area for 26 years. I have used the centre on many occasions as it is a fabulous local space with access to many clubs and groups to suit all ages and all needs. In the past I have volunteered at the Brownies, held children's birthday parties here
and attended many events.

I decided that I should become a volunteer in 2018 as I value the centre and enjoy the strong sense of community spirit that it gives.

Volunteering is such a worthwhile role. I have learned a lot of new skills, met so many talented people and I get a sense of purpose when helping to organise events to raise money to keep the centre going. The role possibly takes a few hours a month, but for me, the reward is much more than that .

Hello, my name is Charlotte, I've grown up in the area and I joined the committee in 2024. I choose to volunteer because I’ve always felt the wonderful community spirit in our village. I had so many good and memorable experiences here as a child, and giving my time now is my way of giving something back. In my spare time I play in the ukulele band and I'm in a local choir. I also enjoy hiking and being outdoors.

Being a Committee Member of the Mellor Brook Community Centre involves me helping to organise activities which contribute to the centre’s development.

It also allows me the opportunity to work with others to strengthen the community spirit.

Marion Willcocks

Hello, I am Marion.

I have lived in Mellor Brook for over 40 years. Originally from Cambridge, I moved north to Manchester to train as a registered nurse (SRN). I worked in the NHS in various hospital settings for over 50 years. I am now enjoying retirement. 

I have used the services of the community centre (baby/toddlers, dance, cubs, scouts) and attended events and helped out at coffee mornings and table-top sales. I felt I should give something back and joined the committee in 2018. I find helping to make a difference is rewarding and you get to meet people,  make new friends, and learn different skills,

 

I am also a PCC member. I enjoy flower arranging and being in a pop-up choir.  My leisure time is taken up with travelling eating out, and the theatre. I am involved in a knitting and crochet group making blankets supporting others for international aid and Oxfam.  

It would be nice to see younger people getting more involved in the work of the centre. Bringing new life and ideas into the local area becoming part of the wider community.
