Tenderly - The Life & Times of Nat King Cole, September 2026

Tenderly: The Life & Times of Nat King Cole Saturday 26th September, 2026

Singer-guitarist Duane Forrest took an attentive 40-strong audience chronologically through the life of the American jazz singer/pianist/actor punctuating the narrative with verse and chorus of many of Cole’s hits over a 29-year career, from the late 1930’s as leader of the Nat King Cole Trio to his death from lung cancer in 1965 at the age of 45. Along the way we learned how the Alabama-born crooner battled through an industry mired in racial discrimination including escaping a murder attempt at a concert in Birmingham, Alabama and how he gradually became more politically aware eventually leading to his boycott of segregated venues. Forrest’s fine singing voice was demonstrated in hit songs including Unforgettable, Smile and When I Fall in Love.
